We are delighted to be involved in this 6 week project at St Cuthbert’s school.
We are working inside in the bad weather and just love working in The Dome. It feels like Rochdale’s version of the Eden Project.
The school and its pupils have some big ideas to develop their green spaces and we are more than happy to support them with our expertise and resources.
Week 1
We have had a great first sessions with @st cuthberts school delivering activities as part of the Beewell project run by @curiousminds .
The project is focussing on engaging young people in out of school activities and providing them with an opportunity to try new things.
Working with school staff and pupils, we had an initial planning session (with snacks) and planted some houseplants to brighten the school environment.
Week 2
Our second session gave us chance to plant up some winter baskets with bulbs and winter bedding plants. The students decided to give them out to teaching staff to highlight the work they are doing. The teaching staff lucky enough to get a planter were thrilled.
We are looking forward to the session planned for after the half term.
Week 3
Week three at St Cuthbert’s was a busy session. The students got to grips with making some ceramic toppers for the canes that will be used in their garden.
The pupils enjoyed working with the clay and produced some wonderful designs with a lot of attention to detail
The session was well attended and the pupils from St Cuthbert’s were a credit to their school and their teaching staff.
The ceramic pieces will have to wait for our next session to be decorated.
We got an enthusiastic thumbs up from the pupils.
Week 4
The students added the finishing touches to their clay toppers this week, using coloured slip. The clay was taken away to be fired in Get Up and Grow’s kiln, ready for the final step of attaching them to the canes.
The group also had some time to make some thumb pots and wind chimes. We think its safe to say that they have caught the pottery bug.
We are as excited as them and can’t wait to see the final results.
Week 5
Our final session at St Cuthbert’s was very popular with the students, who focussed on supporting the biodiversity around the school by making bird feeders to help the birds survive the cold Winter weather and breed successfully in the Spring Months.
